Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman Helps Push HBO Max to 41 Million Subscriber Earlier than Expected

HBO Max is the new player in the streaming world after the huge success of Disney Plus. Another streaming giant Disney Plus that was released last year has gained more than 86 million subscribers in a little over a year. Now, HBO Max is giving Disney Plus the good fight in the race. HBO has now got nearly 40 million US subscribers which were disclosed in AT&T first-quarter earnings report that was published on Wednesday. HBO now has more than 60 million subscribers in Total.

HBO has got the subscriber 2 years before the estimation.  AT&T has credited the new Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 1984 movie for the growth to its subscriber.

The release of Wonder Woman 1984 helped drive our domestic HBO Max and HBO subscribers to more than 41 million, a full two years faster than our initial forecast –  AT&T CEO John Stankey

Due to the global pandemic, HBO has taken some controversial decisions to release its biggest movie on HBO Max the same day as in a theater. HBO is also planning to release some other biggest movies such as Dune. Many directors such as Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan have expressed their disappointment in that decision.

Since Wonder Woman was successful in the digital release, HBO might continue the trend even after the pandemic ends. Unlike Disney plus who charged money for the new movie release such as Mulan, HBO MAX did not charge any extra cost for its release. This also might be the major reason for the increase in subscribers.
