Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry. It initially ran from September 28, 1987, to May 23, 1994, in syndication, comprising 178 episodes over seven seasons. The third series in the Star Trek franchise, it was inspired by Star Trek: The Original Series. Set in the later third of the 24th century, when Earth is part of the United Federation of Planets, it recounts the exploits of a Starfleet starship, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D), in its exploration of the Alpha quadrant in the Milky Way galaxy.
The series was a critical and economic triumph and is considered one of the finest science fiction television series of all time. It won 10 Primetime Emmy Awards and was nominated for 34 more. It has inspired four feature films, and several spin-off programs, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise.
The Next Generation was hailed for its serialized storytelling, its complex characters, and its investigation of moral and philosophical concerns. It also had a diverse cast, featuring the first African-American and Asian-American regulars on a science fiction television series.
The series was led by Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, a smart and caring leader who was always willing to aid others. Other main characters included William Riker (Jonathan Frakes), the first officer; Data (Brent Spiner), a sentient android; Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), the chief engineer; Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), the ship’s doctor; and Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton), the teenage son of the doctor.
The Next Generation was a breakthrough series that served to reshape science fiction television. It was commended for its brilliant writing, its complex characters, and its investigation of moral and philosophical concerns. The series was also an economic success, and served to bring the Star Trek franchise into a new age.
