“1899” is a television series created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, who also created the popular Netflix series “Dark”. The show premiered on Netflix on November 17, 2022. It is a period mystery-science fiction series that is set in the year 1899 and follows a group of European emigrants who are traveling from Southampton, UK to New York City, US on a steamship named Kerberos.
The show explores themes such as immigration, class, power, and identity as the passengers on the ship, from different backgrounds and cultures, confront their differences and come together to face the challenges of their journey. As they cross the Atlantic, strange and unexplainable events start to occur, leading the passengers to question their sanity and the safety of their voyage.
The cast of “1899” includes a multinational and multilingual ensemble of actors, including Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musiał, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, and Rosalie Craig, among others. Despite receiving positive reviews for its casting, directing, cinematography, and acting, “1899” was canceled by Netflix in January 2023, just a few weeks after its premiere. The cancellation was unexpected and has been met with disappointment from fans of the show.
