Steve Franks created the American detective comedy-drama television series Psych for USA Network. Shawn Spencer, a young crime consultant for the Santa Barbara Police Department, is played by James Roday, who uses his “heightened observational skills” and outstanding eidetic memory to persuade people that he solves cases using psychic talents. Shawn’s brilliant best friend and hesitant partner Burton “Gus” Guster is played by Dulé Hill, while Shawn’s father, Henry, is played by Corbin Bernsen, a retired investigator with the Santa Barbara Police Department.

The majority of episodes begin with a flashback to Shawn and Gus’ childhoods as a cold open. Shawn and Gus are generally being given a lesson by a young Henry Spencer (Shawn’s father) (Corbin Bernsen), who aspires for his son to follow in his footsteps and become a police officer. These lessons are frequently used in the episode’s climax. Henry taught Shawn how to refine his talents of observation and reasoning as a child, frequently putting him to the test with games and challenges. Each flashback also establishes the episode’s theme.
