Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are the creators of the upcoming HBO post-apocalyptic drama television series The Last of Us. Following Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, a smuggler charged with escorting the teenage Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, across the post-apocalyptic United States, the series is based on the 2013 video game created by Naughty Dog. It stars Merle Dandridge as the resistance’s commander Marlene, Gabriel Luna as Joel’s younger brother Tommy, and Anna Torv as Joel’s smuggler partner Tess.

Alberta served as the location for The Last of Us, which was reportedly the biggest television production in Canadian history, from July 2021 to June 2022. Produced jointly by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, the Mighty Mint, and Word Games, it is the first HBO show to be based on a video game. The first season has nine episodes that were co-written by Mazin and Druckmann, who also authored and co-directed the original game. The score was written by Gustavo Santaolalla, who also composed for the game. The show will premiere on January 15, 2023. The acting, script, production design, and score were lauded by critics, who hailed it as the best live-action video game adaptation.
