American Auto is an American television sitcom that premiered on NBC on December 13, 2021. Created by Justin Spitzer, the series follows the employees of Detroit-based Payne Motors as they struggle to adjust to a new CEO who knows little about cars. The show features an ensemble cast of talented actors, including Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer, Jon Barinholtz, Tye White, Michael Benjamin Washington, Humphrey Ker, and X Mayo. At the center of the show is Katherine Hastings, Payne Motors’ new CEO played by Ana Gasteyer. Hastings is a classic corporate shark who jumps from one company to another. Before joining Payne Motors, she was in the pharmaceutical industry and often tries to make a parallel between that and the car industry, despite knowing very little about cars. Her arrival at Payne Motors sets off a series of hilarious hijinks as the employees try to navigate her management style and keep the company afloat.
Harriet Dyer plays Sadie Ryan, Payne Motors’ CCO, who is tasked with helping Hastings implement her vision for the company. Jon Barinholtz plays Wesley Payne, the bratty grandson of Payne Motors’ retired CEO, who shows up at headquarters every day but doesn’t really have a job. Tye White plays Jack Fortin, a former assembly-line employee who is brought in to help in the C-suite and acts as a counselor to Hastings. Michael Benjamin Washington plays Cyrus Knight, Payne’s Chief Product Designer, while Humphrey Ker plays Elliot Chisholm, Payne’s General Counsel. X Mayo plays Dori Ovens, Hastings’ assistant, and social media addict. The show has been well-received by critics and audiences alike, with a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 critic reviews. The website’s critics consensus reads, “While American Auto’s hijinks don’t bode well for the future of Payne Motors, they promise a hilarious sitcom with a solid foundation.” Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 68 out of 100 based on 11 critics, indicating “generally favorable reviews.” American Auto is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good laugh and a unique take on the traditional workplace sitcom.
